Beyond the Beans
QAWWA ETHIOPIAN COFFEE EXPORTERS
Globally, women play a major role in the production of coffee. But fewer than 25 percent of coffee farms are female owned or operated. The major reasons for the under-representation of women in coffee production are limited access to land, lack of financing and social support.
Qawwa Coffee Exporters PLC is an all-women owned/operated coffee export business in Ethiopia. Our company thrives on three principles: Export the highest quality specialty coffee. Export high quality coffee produced using environmentally sustainable methods and meets fair trade standards. Empower women coffee farm workers by creating economic opportunities that will enable them to achieve economic self-reliance.
Message from Qawwa CEO
Qawwa Coffee Exporters PLC
Hilina Mezgebu
At Qawwa Coffee Exporters PLC, I am honored to lead an all-women-owned and operated green coffee exporting company that reflects both excellence and purpose. Founded in 2021, Qawwa Coffee Exporters PLC has rapidly gained international recognition for delivering high-quality Ethiopian specialty coffee to global markets.
Our corporate values are deeply rooted in quality, sustainability, and responsibility. We are committed to producing premium specialty coffee using environmentally responsible practices that preserve both the land and the livelihoods connected to it. Women have historically played a vital role across every stage of coffee production—from land preparation and planting to harvesting, processing, sorting, and drying. Their contribution is foundational to the quality and integrity of Ethiopian coffee.
Ethiopia, the Cradle of Mankind and Coffee
Ethiopia, known as the Land of Origins and the Cradle of Mankind, is widely recognized as the birthplace of coffee, with the Kaffa region regarded as the origin of the coffee plant and coffee culture, from which the term “coffee bean” is believed to have evolved from Kaffa bunn; today, coffee is Ethiopia’s leading export commodity, ranking the country among the world’s top five coffee producers, supported by over 4 million small-scale farmers and approximately 12 million people engaged across the coffee value chain—from cultivation and harvesting to processing and global distribution.

We proudly belong to the Ethiopian Women in Coffee Association (EWIC), recognizing coffee as an industry heavily reliant on women’s contributions globally. Gender equality is vital for a sustainable coffee supply chain within the agricultural sector. Women coffee farmers face common challenges prevalent in the agricultural industry, including societal biases that impact land ownership, decision-making, labor distribution, access to information, and leadership roles. Despite these barriers, women play a critical role in coffee production, from harvesting ripe cherries to brewing our beloved cups of coffee, influencing its quality every step of the way.
